There are numerous ways you can serve First Church by offering your time and talents. We encourage you to lend a hand as a volunteer in the ongoing programs and events that are a part of our ministry and life together.

Current volunteer opportunities include:

Be a Church School Teacher
We need volunteers to help shape the lives and faith of the young people of this congregation. Please contact Audrey Webber if you would like to get involved in the 2019-20 Church School program. Email at or call 212.675.6150.

Be a welcoming presence assisting worship attendees on Sunday mornings and at special services. Ushers are on the frontline of FPC hospitality helping to greet and guide visitors and members alike. Serve every Sunday or periodically throughout the year as you are able. Training is provided. To sign up contact Pam Morgan at or by using our sign-up system. Click here to volunteer.

Process the Cross
Serve as a Cross bearer and leader of the processional on a Communion Sunday or at special worship services throughout the year—we welcome youth participation! To volunteer to carry the cross, contact Nadine Stewart at 212.206.7725 or

Be a Lay Reader
It is part of our tradition to have a layperson participate in the worship service by reading the prayer of illumination and first lesson. All ages are invited to serve this important role. If you are interested in participating as a lay reader, contact Nadine Stewart at 212.206.7725 or

Host a Coffee Hour
Hosting coffee hour is a fun and easy way to deepen your discipleship through the ministry of hospitality. Coffee Hospitality Hosts are responsible for recruiting two or three other volunteers to serve coffee after the 11:00 a.m. worship service and for providing a small snack of your choosing. Please include any allergens contained in the snack [The most common listed are Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts), Soy, Wheat, etc]. Each week’s hosts are announced in worship. This is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones (be a host in honor of a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion), connect with others, and meet more of our members and visitors. Pick a week, find your co-hosts, sign up on the sheet at coffee hour in the lobby, call 212.675.6150, or click here.

Kitchen Hospitality
You don’t need to be a chef or even a foodie to join this workgroup. We enjoy a wide range of activities from cooking, food shopping, baking, event and floral design, not to mention lots of ‘sampling’ and fellowship in our kitchen that many NYC restaurants would love to have bragging rights to! We prepare meals and event service for FPC church functions throughout the year. Come join the fun! If you’re interested in volunteering, please email
