Pastoral Nomination Committee

The Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC) has moved into a new phase of our work – the review of potential candidates. Some candidates will be directed to us through PC(USA)’s Church Leadership Connection site. Some will come through solicitations to organizations, seminaries, and caucuses, as well as notifications in online and print resources. We also welcome suggestions from church members and friends like you.

The PNC aims to review a diverse and dynamic pool of applicants. To do this, we encourage everyone’s participation in identifying potential candidates. Have you visited a church and heard a stirring sermon? Have you read about a particularly interesting congregation? Has a friend mentioned an outstanding pastor? Pastoral Nomination Committee Timeline

In considering whether a potential candidate may be a good fit for Pastor/Head of Staff, we recommend beginning with a close read of the Mission Study Report. This document provides an in-depth look at the current church and congregation. Please also review the full Mission Information Form (MIF). This is the document that is posted here as well as on the PC(USA) Church Leadership Connection site. It details information about the call, a list of requested competencies, and a full position description.

The Presbytery asks each church to respond to some foundational questions to give potential candidates insights into what the congregation is looking for and more context on the potential role. Building on the Mission Study Report and our ongoing conversations with many of you, here are the PNC’s responses to those five key questions, as approved by Session and the Commission on Ministry of the New York Presbytery.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally, describe how this vision is lived out.
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization.
For what specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
