FIRST SERVES

ALL-CHURCH VOLUNTEER DAY

SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2010

Join friends and First Church members of all ages for this opportunity to give back to the church and the community.

The Board of Deacons will host a hospitality table at the church with hot coffee and breakfast pastries for groups as they arrive and depart for their respective projects, beginning at 8:30am.

2010 PROJECTS

  • Habitat for Humanity- Specific project details such as location and activities will be available in early February. Please see http://www.habitatnyc.org/ for an overview of current Habitat NYC projects and volunteer experiences. Habitat for Humanity NYC transforms lives and our city by building quality homes for families in need and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing.
    Location:  TBD – Group will leave from church
    Time:  9 am – 6 pm
    Who can participate:  This project is open to people age 16 and older.                
    Other:  5 person limit.  Tools and supplies will be provided.

  • University Community Social Services Soup Kitchen- Two shifts of five volunteers each are needed to help with this soup kitchen in the East Village. One group will help prepare the meal (8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.), the second group will serve and clean up (from 11:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). The soup kitchen is at 137 East 2nd Street between 1st Ave, and Avenue A. Volunteers will not meet at the church beforehand!
    Location: 137 East 2nd Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue Time: 8:30am-11:45am AND 11:45am-3:30pm
    Who can participate: This project is open to people age 12 and older
    Other: Limit of 5 persons per shift

  • On-Site Projects

Location: Around the Church

Time: Coffee and pastries at 8:30am, projects from 9am-noon

Who can participate: Everyone

-         Operation Paperback- Pack up books to send to soldiers abroad. Volunteers will cull Tartan Fair books and can also bring used paperbacks in good condition to donate. Troops have requested the following genres: action, bestsellers, biographies and memoirs, fantasy, history, horror, mysteries, science fiction or true crime.) Volunteers can also write letters to go in the packets.
Other: Please bring boxes for shipping books (large enough to fit 4-5 books or more)

-         One Great Hour of Sharing- Join First Kids as they help bake treats for the One Great Hour of Sharing bake sale. All proceeds benefit

-         Disaster Relief Hygiene Kits- Join First Kids as they assemble hygiene kits for Church World Service. Kits will be sent to Haiti or to replenish warehouses for future need. Supplies will be provided.

-         Small Maintenance Projects- Sharpen pencils in the sanctuary’s pews and help with small tasks around the church as needed.
