From the Danzón to the New Sounds of Afro-Cuban Jazz, this special performance features Cuban pianist and composer David Virelles. The repertoire will be comprised of classic pieces from different periods that defined the idiom of this instrument in the island: danzas by Ramón Figueroa, danzones by Antonio María Romeu, compositions by 20th century composers Alejandro García Caturla and Amadeo Roldán and a collection of Cuban Danzas by David Virelles entitled Èfé. A reception will follow in the Great Hall.

Cuban vocalist, pianist, Afro Cuban dancer Melvis Santa is known for her versatility and creative artistry. At age 14 she founded the all-female collective Sexto Sentido, a project that jazz great Chucho Valdés deemed as “the best Cuban vocal quartet of the past 30 years.” The New York Times defines her style as “possessing 70`s soul underpinnings, yet belonging to the Afro Cuban musical traditions.”
