Here are some answers to the questions people ask most frequently about the First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York:

If you don’t see your question listed, feel free to send an
e-mail to fpcnyc@fpcnyc.org or call us at (212) 675-6150 .

How do I get to the church?

Please see our Directions page.

What does the worship service involve?

We worship each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the main Sanctuary.
Please visit the What to Expect page for more information on this service.

On Wednesdays at noon, from September through May, a short prayer service is held in the Sanctuary. These 20-minute services include prayer, Scripture and music, and are ideal worship opportunities for busy New Yorkers.

On the first Wednesday of every month, from September through May, a 30-minute worship is held in the Alexander Chapel. These services are family-friendly and diverse in theme, such as a Blessing of the Animals service, an Epiphany Service, and Taize worship. Please check the church calendar for specific information on each month’s service.

Where do the children and youth go during worship?

We love kids! Children are always welcome in worship. Many kids attend the first part of the worship service with their parents and are invited to come to the front of the church to join in a children’s prayer before leaving for church school. Skilled professional care is also provided for children under 3: find out more in our Education section.

May I ask someone to pray for me?

Absolutely.  The Board of Deacons has a designated phone line for persons in need of prayer and assistance: (212) 741-8620.  Messages left on the hotline are checked daily.  Deacons are easy to spot on Sunday mornings; they wear name tags and red carnations and are always available to talk.  You may also call the main switchboard and leave a message with the receptionist with your prayer request.

May I hold my wedding ceremony at First Church?

Please see our Weddings page.

Weddings at First Presbyterian Church are performed for members of the church and their families. Either the bride or the groom need to be a member of First Church.

What do Presbyterians believe?

There are many ways to learn more about Presbyterianism.

Our congregation offers an education series called “What Do Presbyterians Believe about…” that covers topics relating to the theology and history of Presbyterianism (such as the Trinity, Salvation by Grace, Baptism and Communion, the Afterlife, and Reading the Bible).

You can also learn more about the Presbyterian Church (USA) at http://www.pcusa.org/navigation/whoweare.htm.

How do I get involved?

There are numerous ways to get involved in the life of the church.  From ushering to volunteering in the homeless shelter, from pouring coffee after worship to cooking dinner for homebound persons with AIDS, there is something for everyone.  Please visit the Help Others and Make Friends sections of the website for many of these opportunities.

May I talk with someone about the church?

We would love to talk with you more about the life and ministry of this church.  You may reach out to our deacons: they always wear name tags and red carnations on Sunday mornings and are ready to answer your questions.  The Deacons also have a designated telephone line: (212) 741-8620. You may also call the main switchboard and make an appointment to meet with one of the pastors.
