Art at First Presents: PERFECT FAMILIES
An exhibition by the artist Gwyneth Leech
Please join us in the Great Hall for an exhibition of family portrait paintings by New York artist, Gwyneth Leech.
Gwyneth studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland and has exhibited widely in Britain and the United States.
Since 2005 she has been working on a project called Perfect Families, painting portraits of alternative and mixed race families. She sees these real people as archetypes for the contemporary American family at a time when mixed race families, trans-racial adoption and above all, same sex marriage and parenting continue to challenge assumptions about societal norms.
From the artist: “My paintings celebrate the diversity of contemporary families, with a particular focus on hands and gestures to express relationships which transcend the politics of race and gender.”
